Baron Smith of Finsbury is the official title of Lord Chris Smith who became Britain's first openly gay member of parliament when he came out in 1984. He went on to serve over 20 years in the House of Commons before becoming the Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport under Prime Minster Tony Blair in 1997. In 2005 he announced that he has been HIV positive since 1987.
In 2008 Lord Smith became the Chairman of the Environment Agency where he is in charge of efforts to better air, land, and water quality. He has been a vocal opponent of global warming. Recently rumors have been mentioned on British tabloid websites linking him to former next President of the United States Al Gore, but not in a romantic way.
