Richard McCann is a best selling author and a creating writing professor at American University. He is best known for his book Mother of Sorrows and a collection of poems called Ghost Letters, but is also an outspoken advocate for gay rights because he is gay.

In 1990 he was diagnosed with Hepatitis C it made him so sick that he eventually had to undergo a liver transplant. He later wrote an essay about his struggles called The Resurrectionist.
