Richard Berkowitz first made headlines in the mid 1970's when he organized the first gay rights protest in the state at Rutgers University in opposition to an anti-gay effigy hung by Delta Kappa Epsilon (Deke) Fraternity. He went on to be an advocate of safe sex in the gay community during the early days of the AIDS epidemic and was the subject of the 2008 documentary "Sex Positive".
George W. Bush was a member of the Yale chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon just a few years before the Rutgers protest.
